EDGE Signs Historic $2.45 Billion Naval Contract with Kuwait

June 4, 2025 By admin Leave a Comment

EDGE Group, a major Emirati defense firm, recently secured a landmark $2.45 billion deal with Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence to supply eight advanced missile patrol vessels, marking a significant achievement for the UAE’s growing domestic defense industry. This contract represents the largest naval shipbuilding export in the Middle East, clearly positioning EDGE as an influential competitor on the international military stage. The agreement covers the entire lifecycle of the vessels, including design, construction, rigorous sea trials, integrated logistics, ongoing in-service support, and comprehensive ammunition provisioning.

At the heart of this deal are the advanced FALAJ-3 class missile patrol boats, developed by EDGE’s subsidiary, Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB). Measuring 62 meters in length, these vessels are adeptly designed for operations across a wide spectrum, capable of effectively performing in shallow coastal regions as well as open ocean environments. Equipped with state-of-the-art combat systems, sophisticated sensors, and advanced weaponry, these ships can proficiently conduct air defense, surface attack, and anti-submarine operations. Additionally, the FALAJ-3 class features cutting-edge stealth technology, characterized by reduced radar, infrared, and acoustic signatures, significantly enhancing their operational discretion. Powered by four robust marine engines driving four propellers, these vessels can achieve speeds exceeding 25 knots and sustain a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles when cruising at 16 knots.

This historic agreement underscores the strengthening defense relationship between Kuwait and the UAE, reflecting a broader pattern of enhanced collaboration among Gulf Cooperation Council members. Kuwait’s decision to enhance its maritime defense capability with these sophisticated missile boats aligns with its strategic objective to strengthen national security and safeguard maritime assets in an increasingly complex security landscape. The UAE’s capacity to offer end-to-end defense solutions through EDGE and ADSB highlights the nation’s significant advances in military industrial capabilities. The recent successful commissioning of the first vessel in this class, ALTAF, into the UAE Navy further demonstrates the proven effectiveness and reliability of these platforms.

Overall, this substantial contract not only enhances Kuwait’s maritime defensive posture but also solidifies EDGE’s international credibility as a defense exporter. It signifies the UAE’s broader ambition to become a central hub of military technological innovation, illustrating the nation’s remarkable industrial growth and engineering sophistication in the defense sector.
